14 June – World Blood Donor Day
World Blood Donor Day, celebrated every year on June 14, aims to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and to express gratitude to all voluntary blood donors around the world.
This day is also an opportunity to acknowledge those who, with their selflessness and humanity, contribute to saving human lives.
Blood donation situation in the country:
In the Republic of North Macedonia, the need for blood is constant, and approximately 55,000 units of blood are provided annually, which is sufficient to cover the basic needs of the healthcare system.
However, it is of utmost importance to continuously engage voluntary, unpaid blood donors, especially young people.
According to the Red Cross of RNM data, more than 70% of donors are regular, and over 40% of them donate blood more than twice a year.
Each unit of donated blood can save up to three lives.
The role of the Red Cross
The Red Cross of the Republic of North Macedonia, in cooperation with the Institute for Transfusion Medicine, organizes hundreds of blood donation campaigns every year, particularly in collaboration with schools, faculties, companies, and municipalities.
Our goal is to raise awareness, especially among young generations, about the importance of regular and voluntary blood donation.
Let’s be humane. Let’s be solidaristic.
Each of us can be someone’s hero.
