Caring for the mental health of the elderly during the hot summer involves a combination of creating a comfortable environment, encouraging social interaction, promoting physical health, and providing emotional support.

Techniques:

  • Make sure their living space is comfortable, cool and well ventilated.
  • Maintain a consistent daily routine to provide structural day and reduce anxiety. Always set same time for meals, medication schedule, and bedtime routines.
  • Include a mix of physical, social and cognitive activities to keep them engaged and active.
  • Allow them social interaction/family visits: Encourage family members to visit regularly or arrange virtual visits if not visiting them.
  • Participate in community events, senior centers, or group activities held in air-conditioned venues.
  • Help them connect with friends and family through social media, video calls or online groups.
  • Provide them with light physical activity, such as stretching, walking indoors or chair exercises, to maintain physical health without excessive exertion.
  • Make sure they have constant mental stimulation – Cognitive activities: Engage in mentally stimulating activities like puzzles, reading, card games, or thinking games.
  • Encourage them to have hobbies such as knitting, painting or gardening in protected, shaded areas.
  • It is important that they feel emotional support: talk to them and listen to them and validate their feelings. Be sympathetic and understand their concerns.
  • Seek help from mental health professionals if they show signs of depression, anxiety or other mental health problems.
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts readily available, including doctors, family members and neighbors.
  • Check them regularly, especially during heat waves, to make sure they are safe and comfortable.
