MAY 8 – WORLD RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT DAY
Every year, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement marks May 8 as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day in honor of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Movement, who was born on May 8, 1828. On this day, Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world place special emphasis on the importance of fundamental principles and values, recognize the contributions of members and volunteers, and express gratitude to partners for the support they provide to the Red Cross. From May 8 to 15, the Red Cross of the Republic of North Macedonia traditionally marks the Red Cross of RNM Week with various activities across the country.
The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was initially established to assist the wounded on the battlefield and to set humanitarian standards in society. Over the years, in the Red Cross we have learned to do many other things in the interest of our fellow citizens, with the goal of responding to modern-day challenges and providing assistance and support—together with our partners—to those who need us and expect it from the Red Cross, as one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the world.
We are especially proud that the Red Cross of the Republic of North Macedonia, which this year celebrates 80 years of existence, has grown into a modern, neutral, and independent organization that makes a significant contribution to improving the social-humanitarian and health-preventive conditions of various population groups in the country. Our national society also plays a crucial auxiliary role in supporting state authorities, particularly in providing aid and support to populations affected by natural and man-made disasters.
This year, the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is being celebrated under the motto “On the Side of Humanity” to give special recognition to our volunteers and members for their continued humanitarian support, and to highlight the importance of fundamental principles, especially the principle of humanity, which forms the basis of all our humanitarian work—without which the other principles could not be realized.
To be humane means to have a heart full of spirit and the desire to help others. Each of us plays an important role in making our community a more pleasant place to live and act. Every good deed we do serves as a motivation for fellow citizens to join us in our mission to help those who find themselves in vulnerable situations. We invite everyone to continue standing on the side of humanity as we strive to build a more humane society where the dignity and well-being of citizens are held above all.
We wish a happy May 8th—World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day—to all our volunteers, members, and staff, and we invite all people of goodwill to become part of our humanitarian story.
