JOINT COOPERATION BETWEEN THE MACEDONIAN RED CROSS AND UNICEF
The Macedonian Red Cross, within the framework of the Program for Disaster Preparedness and Response, with the support of UNICEF, started the implementation of the project “Disaster Risk Reduction Activities in Primary Schools in the period from 16.11.2017 to 15.11.2018. and kindergartens in Gevgelija, Kumanovo and Skopje “
The project envisages the following activities divided into four phases:
First phase
Assessment of the vulnerability and capacities of kindergartens and primary schools in Gevgelija and Kumanovo and kindergartens in Skopje. Within the selected municipalities, an assessment will be made of the vulnerability and risks of natural disasters and other accidents that may occur in the main kindergartens and their clones as well as primary schools. The assessment will be prepared according to a previously prepared questionnaire based on the methodology for vulnerability assessment and capacities of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Upon completion of the assessment, experts will make an analysis of them and will select the institutions with which the planned project activities will be carried out during 2018.
The second phase
Preparation of a set of manuals for strengthening the educational process in the area of natural disasters and other accidents. The set of manuals will be for:
- Teaching staff how to implement content in the area of disaster risk reduction in kindergartens and primary schools; and
- Parents aiming at raising awareness among the wider population.
The manuals will be developed in cooperation with the Bureau for Development of Education, Center for Crisis Management, Directorate for Protection and Rescue and the Macedonian Red Cross.
Reduce the risks of natural disasters and other accidents in schools and kindergartens by investing in their carelessness.
All selected kindergartens and primary schools will be subjected to detailed assessments on the basis of which the needs will be determined (protection and rescue plans and evacuation plans, panic signaling, first aid boxes, fire extinguishers, etc.). After determining the needs, the practical development of the planning documentation will be done and activities for technical regulation of the facilities will be undertaken.
The third phase
Training of first-aid for education staff (training for three representatives from an institution for providing first aid to working organizations)
Training of educational personnel for protection and self-protection in case of disasters (training for protection and self-protection in case of disaster, aimed at reducing disaster risks, evacuation and promotion of hygiene in kindergartens, as well as methods and methods for training children and youth on the same topic) – 10 representatives from the institution
Training of children for protection and self-protection in case of disasters (training for protection and self-protection in case of disaster, aimed at reducing the risks of disasters, evacuation and promotion of hygiene in kindergartens) – 30 children from institution
Fourth phase
Conducting practical exercises for the application of evacuation plans – evacuation (final phase of the project activities aimed at checking the acquired knowledge of children and staff from the selected kindergarten together with all institutions involved in the protection and rescue system – MOI, SSO, CMC, Ambulance , Fire Brigade, Local Self-Government etc.)
