Marking the Week of combating cancer 01-08 March 2024

In accordance with the calendar of traditional activities of the Red Cross of the Republic of North Macedonia, the national society will mark the Week of combating cancer under the motto “Early detection saves life” in the period of March 1 – 8, 2024,.

Every year in the world more than 12 million people get sick from some kind of cancer, and 7.6 million die as a result of the disease. In the Republic of North Macedonia, about 6,000 new cases of cancer patients are diagnosed every year. These numbers are truly frightening and alarming. Experts from the International Union of Cancer and WHO emphasize that approximately 40% of cancers can potentially be prevented and the risk of developing cancer can be significantly reduced by applying simple preventive measures and changing lifestyles.

Within the Week, the Red Cross branches will undertake activities to raise public awareness among the general population by conducting educational workshops for different target groups as well as sharing posts on social networks with messages on prevention and timely diagnosis of cancer.
