Marking the Week for combatting Cancer
In the period of 01 – 08 March 2023, according to the calendar of traditional activities, the Red Cross of the Republic of North Macedonia will mark the Week for combatting cancer under the motto “Knowledge saves life”.
Each year, more than 12 million people in the world are expected to be diagnosed with some kind of malignant disease, and 7.6 will million die as a result of the disease. In the Republic of North Macedonia, about 6,000 new cases of cancer patients are diagnosed every year. These numbers are truly frightening and alarming. Experts from the Union for International Cancer Control and the World Health Organization emphasize that approximately 40% of cancers can potentially be prevented and the risk of developing malignant diseases can be significantly reduced by applying simple preventive measures and changing lifestyles.
On the occasion of marking the Week, the Red Cross branches and City Red Cross of Skopje will organize educational lectures and share posts on social networks in order to contribute for raising public awareness on the importance of prevention and timely diagnosis of malignant diseases. These educational workshops will be targeted for young people, high school students, as well as the older population according to gender and the risk for developing certain type of malignant disease.
