Marking the Week for fight against Cancer, March 1-8, 2021
In accordance with the calendar of traditional activities, the Red Cross of the Republic of North Macedonia will mark the Week for fight against Cancer under the motto “I can and I will succeed” – in the fight against cancer, in the period of March 1 – 08, 2021.
A key role in the fight against cancer is played by health services for its early detection.
More than 12 million people worldwide are diagnosed with some form of cancer each year, while 7.6 million die from the disease. In the Republic of North Macedonia, about 6,000 new cases of cancer are detected every year. These numbers are really terrifying and alarming.
Malignant diseases with a share of 20-25% are in second place in terms of causes of death immediately after cardiovascular diseases.
Experts from the International Union for Cancer and the WHO point out that approximately 40% of cancers can be potentially prevented and the risk of developing cancer can be significantly reduced by applying simple preventative measures and changing lifestyles:
- quitting smoking and avoidance of passive smoking,
- limited alcohol consumption,
- daily physical activity,
- eating healthy food,
- maintaining a normal body weight,
- avoiding excessive sun exposure and
- protection against infections that cause cancer.
