Resilience of the elderly in a changing world

The Red Cross of the Republic of North Macedonia participates in the commemoration of October 1 – the International Day of the Older Persons, which was designated by the United Nations General Assembly on December 14, 1990, to encourage countries to raise awareness and challenge the negative stereotypes and misconceptions about older people and aging and to enable older people to realize their potential.

The global theme set by the UN for the 2022 International Day of the Older Persons is “Resilience of older people in a changing world” and aims to:

  • To highlight the resilience of older women in the face of environmental, social, economic and lifelong inequalities
  • To raise awareness of the importance of improved world-wide data collection, disaggregated by age and gender
  • To call on member states, UN entities, UN Women, and civil society to include older women in the center of all policies, ensuring gender equality

These global goals are part of our country’s policies that are aligned with the Madrid International Plan of Action on Aging. The Red Cross of RNM is actively involved and contributes to the overall efforts undertaken by the competent institutions in realizing the rights, necessary care and protection of the older people in the country.

On the occasion of marking the International Day of the Older People, the City Red Cross of Skopje and the Red Cross branches will organize activities related to this year’s theme – emphasizing the role of older women in overcoming certain challenges and contributing to their solutions. Educational workshops on the rights of the older people, informative workshops on issues of interest to the older people, creative workshops for the active involvement of senior citizens, are just some of the activities that will be carried out on the occasion of the day.
